On our girls trip in Italy, we spent a day in San Gimignano. We were staying in Siena and had a rental car, so we drove from Siena to San Gimignano. This drive was about 45 minutes through the most gorgeous hills of Tuscany. We also drove to a winery just outside of San Gimignano for a wine tasting.
Pretty much everyone in Tuscany was recommending to us that we visit San Gimignano and once we arrived, we understood why.
The Town.
San Gimignano is such a quaint, and beautiful town that has perfectly preserved its history.
We had to park our car outside of the city walls and walk through the wall to get into the town. Once we were inside, there were tons of local shops, cafes, leather goods stores, markets, and more. Like most walled-off town centers in Italy, there were no cars inside of the town.
The Winery – Podere La Marronaia
While we were in San Gimignano, we drove to a stunning winery called Podere La Marronaia for a wine tasting.
Thankfully, it was the low season of mid-October, so we were able to make last minute decisions when it came to our plans. In the high summer seasons, it’s almost always necessary to make reservations at wineries way ahead of time, but for us, we were able to call just a few hours before and get a table!
The other winery we visited during this girls trip was Casa Emma, which is more north between Florence and Siena.
We really showed up to this winery now knowing what to expect, and we were completely blown away.
The winery had incredible views, wine, food, and they even had the cutest dogs walking around and sitting with us as we sipped wine under the Tuscan sun. We had both oil and wine during the tasting.
While driving to and from San Gimignano, there are so many wineries that you will pass. In the photo above, you can see the town on the top of the hill, which is San Gimignano. Podere La Marronaia was less than a ten minute drive from the town, which was so convenient.
Our goal was to see San Gimignano and visit a winery in the same day, and given the proximity of the winery and the town, we had more than enough time to both and get back to Siena for a late dinner.
